Women’s health is sometimes overlooked in the past. However, in modern times we see great advancements dedicated to empowering women’s health. It’s time to prioritize your health and yourself. The anatomy and physiology of the women’s body are unique thus care of women’s health is also unique.

#1 Menstrual health

The first thing we need to talk about is menstrual health. Even in 2024 in various regions of the world, it is still taboo. The primary reason for the same can be a lack of education and the prevalence of improper knowledge regarding the same topic.

Menstruation is different for different women, Each woman has a unique experience with their periods. Some have heavy bleeding, some have little bleeding, some have irregular periods, some have very painful periods and some have little painful ones. Thus it’s unique to everyone.

During this time a woman is severely weak due to the blood loss and often has mood swings mostly due to the underlying hormonal changes.

The woman’s body is unique and is heavily affected by hormonal changes. Hormones regulate bodily functions like metabolism, moods, reproductive health, menstruation, and more. An array of symptoms ranging from weight fluctuations, mood swings, skin changes, acne, and irregular menstruation can be attributed to poor hormonal; health in your body.

Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are the key factors dictating the prognosis of the overall disease. Also, if you have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer then the odds of you contracting the disease is significantly high. Thus proper screening is necessary. #4 Urinary Health

Women are more likely to develop Urinary Tract Infections(UTIs) due to anatomical and hormonal reasons. The symptoms include fever, burning sensation during micturition, bloody urine, or frequent urination.

For proper urinary health one should be properly hydrated, complete bladder voiding, and good menstrual hygiene is also important.

UTIs are treated with antibiotics depending on the specific organisms causing the disease. If you experience these symptoms visit your healthcare provider ASAP.

Regular PAP smears can be a cornerstone in women’s health and play a crucial role in preventing and treating cervical cancer. Like breast cancer, the main factor is early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Screening should be done after 25 years as recommended by the American Cancer Society.

Early detection of abnormal cells allows for timely intervention, potentially preventing the development of cervical cancer. Additionally, Pap smears can detect infections such as human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection linked to cervical cancer

Pregnancy is the most vital event in a female’s life. Women’s health changes physically and mentally after pregnancy. Life pre-partum and postpartum are entirely different. Planning pregnancy is important and once you are pregnant you need to look after the following factors for a good pregnancy with minimal to no complications.

  • detection of pregnancy with UPT and USG
  • doing proper antenatal check-ups
  • visiting your OBGYN timely
  • doing routine blood works
  • having a good diet(to be discussed by your ob-gyn)
  • staying hydrated
  • taking iron-folic acid supplements
  • Calcium supplements
  • taking vaccines
  • doing routine USG scans

Apart from these, your husband’s and family's support is crucial during this moment. Trying limiting household chores or heavy activities as much as possible. After childbirth, taking care of the baby, breastfeeding, vaccination and your care is vital for a good postpartum period.

#7 Mental Health

Not only the body, but even the women’s mind reacts differently to various situations. Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, and for women, it often comes with unique challenges and considerations. Ranging from hormonal fluctuations to societal pressures or to marriage, childbirth, and pregnancy reasons can be attributed to the varying emotions in the women’s kind.

The only key solution to this problem is seeking help from a professional. Visit your doctor, seeking counseling therapy, or medication whichever suits you. Reaching out to support groups or trusted family or friends helps a lot. Practicing self-care, meditation, mindfulness, or engaging in your hobbies plays a great role in dealing with mental health issues. However, it’s always suggested you see a professional.
